One of the most powerful freedoms that we have in a Democratic society is the ability to be heard through our vote. On June 10, the residents of Wells will have the opportunity to get out and vote in the Republican primary for State House District 7.

The Town of Wells has been blessed with the selfless service of a number of fine residents who have cared enough about the growth and progress of our town and our state to serve its residents whether through volunteer work, paid town work or local office. One such person is District 7 current State Rep. Kathy Chase. Fortunately, District 7 was well represented by Chase for eight years. Unfortunately, she is now term limited.

However, today our community has the opportunity to continue to be well represented by someone who, himself, has a long list of accomplishments and accolades. This person is none other than Mr. Robert “Bob” Foley.

I initially came to know Foley through my joining The Rotary Club of Wells, where I observed and admired his volunteer work and participation in all facets of the club. Not only has he been past club president and the orchestrator of wonderful club fundraisers, such as the annual chicken barbecue held at Wells Harbor in the summers, but he has also been the charismatic TV presence for the club during its annual auction fundraisers. Undoubtedly, his presence and hard work has helped the club raise much of the money it uses for community support.

Many in our community know Foley through his fine and committed service as a selectman, as he has successfully implemented a number of projects that have positively impacted all residents. His ability to respectfully listen to all sides of a situation, weigh the facts, lead committees, and bring people of all sides of an issue together to find a resolution are all important attributes that anyone representing our town should have. Indeed, these are qualities that are often lacking in some people representing our state and national governments today. I think we’ve all seen the dangers of entrusting people in important positions who lack experience, accomplishments, trustworthiness and true vision.

I urge the residents of Wells to pause and consider two very crucial points: Every vote is important to national, state and local elections, so we need to get out and vote in our primary, to be held on June 10.

Second, I urge the residents of Wells to consider supporting candidate Foley for State representative to District 7. Take a look at him as a resident of our community, a husband and proud father of a wonderful family. Most importantly, Foley is the only candidate running for District 7 in both the June primary and the November election who has the the integrity and leadership skills our community deserves as state representative, just like we had with Chase.
