The committee sponsored the contest to improve paper recycling in the schools and municipal buildings. Non-paper items such as drink bottles and soda cans, organic waste (banana and orange peels) and plastic waste and trash were mistakenly being placed in the paper recycling containers, or toters, that are found throughout the town.

Copies of the winning posters will be placed on the paper recycling totes to help students, employees and residents understand paper recycling. Winners are: Mason Galway and Riley Sterling, Grade 2, both students at Morse Street School; and seven students from Mast Landing School: Jillian Wight, Isla Wilson and Ava Klein in Grade 3, Eli Andreson and Andrew Morrissey in Grade 4; and Anna Yankee and Kaitlyn Sawicki in Grade 5.

The Solid Waste and Recycling Committee focuses on increasing Freeport’s recycling rate by providing information and education. The committee seeks ideas on the types of information and programs that may be the most useful to residents. The committee invites anyone who has an interest in recycling to contact the committee and/or to attend an upcoming committee meeting.
