Pre-K and kindergartners at Pine Tree Academy in Freeport recently celebrated “Colonial Day.” Students participated in a variety of activities related to colonial life such as writing on slates, weaving, playing colonial games and enjoying a picnic lunch. Graysen Creamer peers over an incubator in Kathy Hardy’s kindergarten class at Pownal Elementary School. One baby chicken had hatched and another was just about to. The students were studying life cycles in a science project. A local farmer was to pick up the baby chickens once the class was finished.
Teacher Karen Massey joined a total of 40 Freeport High School students and teachers at the University of Southern Maine Gorham campus during the third week in May for Model U.N. Massey, who is retiring, has been taking students to the event for 14 years, and was recognized at USM this year, along with her students. Freeport students earned three of the top awards, and they won Best Delegation Award, representing the United States. Diplomacy Awards (highest) went to Nick Nelsonwood, Travis Libsack and Lily LaMarre. Distinguished Delegate Awards (second highest) went to Dalton Chapman, Taylor Schenker and Joseph Biberstein. Honorable Mentions went to Ethan Pierce, Caleb Abbott, Lauren Carter and Mathieu Starke.
