Garden club plant sale
Songo Garden Club will hold its bi-annual plant sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Naples Village Green.
More than 650 perennials, herbs, edibles, small shrubs and ornamental grasses will be available to choose from.
An assortment of concrete stepping stones, created by club members, also will be sold.

Book club meets Friday
Portland Public Library will host its Friday Night Book Club at 5:30 p.m. Friday at 5 Monument Square for those interested in reading and discussing fiction written within the past 20 years.
The group meets on the last Friday of each month in Rines Auditorium. Discussions are led by library staff members.
A time for networking and socializing is offered before the discussion begins.
Refreshments will be provided.
This month, the club will discuss “An Unnecessary Woman” by Rabih Alameddine.

Tea at the Tate House
Sign-ups are being taken for a Tea Time at the Tate House Museum event, planned for 1 to 4 p.m. June 8 at 1267 Westbrook St.
Nellie’s Teas of South Portland proprietress Marianne Russo will be pouring tea and serving scones with clotted cream, lemon curd and jam in our garden, weather permitting, while entertaining her audience with tea lore.
Tickets are $12 for members and $16 for all others, with admission including a tour of the Tate House.

DAR luncheon on tap
Reservations are being accepted through Saturday for individuals who wish to attend a Rebecca Emery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution luncheon, set for 11:30 a.m. June 7 at the Ramada at Saco Plaza, 352 North St.
The event will feature guest speaker Adam Bartow, New England Region vice president of the Children of the American Revolution and former senior state president of the Maine CAR.

Sign-ups for soccer camp
Sign-ups are being taken through June 13 for the 2014 Thornton Academy Soccer Camp for boys and girls, set for 9 a.m. to noon daily June 30 through July 2 at at TA’s Hill Stadium, 438 Main St.
The camps are open to students ages 10-14.
This camp is run by TA’s boys varsity coach, Andrew Carlson, and is designed to develop individual soccer skills within the context of team play.
Cost is $50 per camper and includes a T-shirt.

Tibetan teacher to speak
Tibetan teacher Anam Thubten will speak at 7 p.m. Monday in the Morrell Meeting Room at Curtis Public Library at 23 Pleasant St.

Hike-A-Thon rescheduled
The Wilhelm Reich Museum has rescheduled its planned “Hike-A-Thon” on the trails at Orgonon for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the museum’s Conference Center on Dodge Pond Road.
Orgonon was the 160-acre home, laboratory and research center of the Austrian-born psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich.
Prizes and refreshment will be included .
Proceeds will benefit the museum’s Hands-On Children’s Activity Program.

Cancer center hosting social
The Cancer Community Center will host its annual Summertime Social from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at East Coast Yacht Sales at 106 Lafayette St.

The Animal Welfare Society, Lucky Pup Rescue, Another Chance, and other dog adoption groups will join the Old Orchard Beach Community Animal Watch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park and the Old Orchard Beach Dog Park on Heath Street with adoptable dogs.
Seasonal worker conference
The Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce will host its premiere J-1 Seasonal Workforce Educational Conference from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall on Sixth Street.
The town hires more than 450 foreign workers annually to supplement its seasonal workforce. As such, it is the largest employing community in the state.
The conference will feature speakers from the State Department, Washington, D.C.; the Maine Department of Labor; the Social Security Administration; and town officials, who all will provide the latest regulations, requirements and resources to consider when hiring international students.
Come meet representatives from many sponsoring organizations, who connect international students with employers and housing providers.

Bill Burke to present talk
Cape Elizabeth resident Bill Burke will present a talk titled “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Memorial Library at 6 Scott Dyer Road.
Burke co-wrote Ted Turner’s 2008 New York Times best-selling autobiography, “Call Me Ted.”
Chairman of the Portland Sea Dogs and the U.S. Biathlon Association, Burke also is a trustee of Maine Medical Center and held key positions at Time Warner and Turner Broadcasting.

Parade and 21-gun salute
The town’s Memorial Day parade will start at 9:15 a.m. Monday from the Town Offices on School Street and proceed down Route 202 to Windham High School for a memorial ceremony and flag-burning ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by a 21-gun salute and bell-ringing ceremony to honor deceased Windham area veterans.
The 3rd Maine Civil War Reenactors will participate in the parade and conduct the 21-gun salute during the memorial ceremony.

Live opossums at library
The Cathance River Education Alliance and the Topsham Library will host the next program in their monthly Community Nature Programs Series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the library at 25 Foreside Road.
The talk “Oh! Possums: Exploring Maine’s Marsupial & Nocturnal Animals” will feature live opossums and other nocturnal animals from the Center For Wildlife in Cape Neddick.
