In response to the parking meter proposal in Biddeford, some have mentioned too many problems with paper money and foreign coins. I remember when they got rid of the meters we had in Biddeford because of those meters not being able to handle foreign coins ”“ they would get stuck and then they would have to have them fixed.
Like any wireless device today, you are going to have your problems with these high-tech meters, and this is an added toy for the troubled kids to mess with and cause more problems for the police department.
As for word on the street, I agree with a recent letter writer who said business owners are opposed to these meters, because I’ve had business people tell me if they put meters in, they’ll take their business to Sanford or Kennebunk.
I don’t want to see my taxes go up, and every time something new comes in, our taxes get raised. We tried getting trash cans at our condominium on Western Avenue, and they said we could only have recycle bins. Well, there are 12 condos and we individually pay our taxes of $2,100 each, so figure the math. I think we pay more than our share, since we only own the inside of our place, and we have to divide the property by 12 units, which isn’t much land individually.
You drive by our place and you’ll be lucky if you see four or five recycle bins out there, and we got 12 of them. We now have to pay for trash bags. I went to my new councilor and he told me to go see Councilor Bob Mills, that he was the man to talk to. Well, what are paying our councilor for, to get passed to someone else? If we only need one voting place, then we only need one councilor for that ward.
I do want to see my tax money being used efficiently. I am tired of seeing city workers standing around and doing nothing but talking with another city worker. I had asked a city worker one day to dispose of a diaper across from the courthouse where I parked my car, and he had a tool to pick it up. Well, when I left work it was still there. I was told it wasn’t his job by another city worker.
So, tell me, what am I paying for with my taxes? The streets aren’t paved and the white lines are not painted on the crosswalks.
