Downtown, by definition, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is “the chief business section of the city.”
For those who don’t know where downtown Biddeford is, like the mayor and city council, it’s where you hold your meetings, it’s where Reilly’s Bakery, City Hall and the McArthur Library are. It’s the center of the city.
Now wasn’t that stupid, having to explain to our mayor and council members where “downtown” is located. Look up “downtown Biddeford” on your computer. To the people who live in Biddeford, don’t ask the council or the mayor where downtown is located, because they’re still looking for it.
I have lived in Biddeford for more than 50 years, and I know where downtown is located. I can close my eyes and picture downtown Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunk. More than 2,200 people who signed our petition on parking meters for downtown Biddeford know where downtown is located ”“ even City Councilor Bob Mills, who signed my petition for parking meters in downtown Biddeford. I also said to him that we wanted to put this issue on the June ballot.
Shame on our mayor for once again questioning the intelligence of the people of Biddeford. The people don’t need an explanation of such a simple statement as, “Do you want parking meters installed in downtown Biddeford?”
If the mayor and the council don’t understand the statement, than the City of Biddeford is in serious trouble. The mayor should look around: Kennebunk, Sanford, Wells, etc. do not have parking meters.
We don’t care if the new meters can talk. If the mayor cares so much about these new meters, he should have one put at his home.
Also, what is the cost and installment cost of one of these meters? I noticed those costs have not been mentioned.
The mayor and council members should respect the voters of Biddeford and stop wasting time changing something we don’t want changed. Move on to more issues requiring attention, like the fence for the non-existent airport. I have yet to see more than one or two planes leave that strip. It’s strictly recreational and nothing more. We’re going to spend much-needed money somewhere else. It’s been said the cost is only $16,000 but the money the state would give ”“ where does that money come from? It comes from the taxpayers. Wake up.
If we’re going to spend money on recreation, let’s spend that money for thousands of people and kids, rather than on a handful of pilots. If you absolutely have to spend money, how about feeding the homeless, work toward improving our community, giving the elderly a tax break, breaking rents down to reasonable rates or lowering taxes?
