Meetings
The Pownal Board of Selectmen meet Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on changes and updates being proposed to the town’s land use codes, in preparation for vote at town meeting in June, on Wednesday, April 16, at 6 p.m., in the De Witt Room at Mallett Hall.
This is the second in a series of public hearings the Planning Board will hold. Copies of the ordinances and synopses of the updates can be obtained at the town office prior to the hearing. All Pownal residents are urged to attend these hearings and give the Planning Board their input.
The Pownal Planning Board workshop for ongoing ordinance review is Tuesday, April 22, from 8-9:30 a.m., at Mallett Hall, Old Selectmen’s Office.
All Planning Board meetings, onsite inspections and workshops are open to the public.
Drug safety for seniors
Local enforcement agencies invite seniors to a program on Friday, April 11, at the First Parish Congregational Church in Pownal, from 10-11 a.m., to learn about how to keep drugs safely and dispose of them properly. Those who attend can bring any outdated or unwanted medications and law enforcement will dispose of it. Coffee and snacks will be provided. Folk dancing set for April 20
Community folk dancing is scheduled for Sunday, April 20, from 7-9 p.m., at the Pownal Town Hall, 429 Hallowell Road, featuring international folk dances. There will be traditional music and dance from the Balkans, Israel, France, Greece and around the world. Mixed-level dances will be taught, followed by requests. The family dance and social hour will be back on May 4.
There is no cost for first-timers. Suggested donation is adults $5, children $3, family $12.

Holy Week schedule at North Pownal United Methodist
North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road, will have a joint Maundy Thursday service with the First Parish Congregational
Church on April 17, at 7 p.m. The Rev. John Wentworth from the First Parish Congregational Church will share the service with the Rev. Raymond St. Pierre of the North Pownal church. All faiths are welcome.
The North Pownal United Methodist Church Good Friday Service is April 18 at 6:30 p.m., led by St. Pierre. The church’s Easter Service is Sunday, April 20, at 9 a.m. The church will celebrate the confirmation of the Confirmation Class.
Egg hunt this Sunday
The North Pownal United Methodist Church is hosting its eight annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday April 13, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The egg hunt is for children age 12 and younger. In addition to the egg hunt, there will be refreshments, games, crafts and more. All are welcome. RSVP to Deb Larrabee, 240-1637.
Bible study group under way
The Rev. Ray St. Pierre invites the community of Pownal and the surrounding areas to join him and the North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road, on a 12- 16-week Bible study entitled, “Celebration of Discipline,” the path to spiritual growth by Richard Foster. The group meets at the church from 6:30-8 p.m. every Thursday until finished. The spiritual disciplines will be divided into three categories: inward, outward and corporate. With the guidance of Richard Foster’s book, participants will explore the specific Biblical passages that will bring them closer to one another and closer to God.

Residents should check flood maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is in the process of amending the flood maps on which many of the town’s building setbacks and regulations are based upon. Homeowners are urged to come into the Town Office during business hours and take a look at the proposed maps to see if any changes are proposed that might affect their property. The proposed maps for Pownal are on display in the voting room on the first floor of Mallett Hall.
Men’s breakfast
The Men’s Breakfast at the First Parish Congregational Church of Pownal, 422 Hallowell Road, is held the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the church. It is open to any men who want to come. They do not have to be affiliated with the church. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.

North Pownal United Methodist Church worship service is Sunday at 9 a.m., Sunday School at 10:30. Pastor’s hours are Tuesdays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. (by appointment). Church phone is 688-4938. Returnables sought to support fire-rescue
The Pownal Fire Co. works to support the Pownal Fire & Rescue Department. In addition to providing food during fires and trainings, the organization purchases work uniforms and equipment for the town’s emergency personnel. The money the fire company is able to donate toward these items helps to keep the fire department’s expenses down. The organization seeks donations of returnable bottles and cans to help fund its work. The Pownal Fire Co. is independent from the town of Pownal and the Pownal Fire and Rescue Department. The bottle building is located behind the town hall.
