To everyone who came to the recent AMVETS Post 1 White Clover benefit breakfast, we sincerely thank you ”“ and apologize as well. Why apologize? Simply put, you overwhelmed our kitchen crew.
As many of you already know, our breakfasts are not prepared in advance and placed under heat lamps; each breakfast is cooked fresh as they are ordered. Since our grill cook only has space to do no more than, at best, five breakfast orders at a time, orders do get backed up.
So, for those of you who had to wait, thank you for your patience and understanding. You were part of a record breakfast event and without your support, this would just have been another very good breakfast for AMVETS Post 1.
That’s right ”“ this was a record breakfast on several counts:
”¢ Twelve volunteers worked this breakfast ”“ more than ever before.
”¢ More than 160 breakfasts were prepared and served ”“ a record. In fact, the second record breakfast this season. And for that matter, our loyal patrons provided an over-the-top season.
Ӣ Receipts for the breakfast as well as White Clover donations totaled $755, another record, all of which will go to helping Maine veterans and their families.
Here’s a summary of beneficiaries from other breakfasts this season: Biddeford High School ”“ two $500 grants for selected seniors; Biddeford food pantries ”“ gour food pantries shared more than $1,000 to purchase food; Volunteers of America Veterans Assistance Center (West Street, Biddeford) ”“ about $500 was “parlayed” into well over $1,000 worth of personal health care and individual hygiene maintenance items. AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary member Heidi Aldrich is due much thanks for this, as it was her diligence and fortuitous use of coupons and other incentives that more than doubled the efforts results. A huge thank you to Heidi. Great job!
Since this was the final AMVETS breakfast this season, I would be remiss in not recognizing our dedicated volunteers who every breakfast show up and willingly do what has to be done. At the risk of omitting someone, for which I ask forgiveness if I do, here is the breakfast crew: Richard Thibodeau ”“ grill master; Paul Thibodeau ”“ meat and potatoes man; Robert Bourgault ”“ toastmaster; dishwashers/bussers ”“ Gene Foster, Dave Field, Richard Lamontagne, Guy Gowen and “Ace” Adcox; kitchen manager ”“ Tinou Lamontagne; breakfast supplies ”“ Shelley Pelletier; waitresses ”“ Bonnie Yoho, Barbara Field and Faedra Binnette.
Thank you all. It was a great season and there will be an encore performance in August when AMVETS Post 1 will host a breakfast for, and in support of, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team when they come to play a game at Old Orchard Beach. Watch for more information about this worthy cause.
