LADY LAKE, Fla. — John J. “Jack” Button, 76, formerly of Arundel, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on March 3, 2014 at his home.

Jack was born in Burlington, Vt., the son of Llewellyn and Bernice “Jeannette” (Jocelyn) Button.

He graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1955 and moved to Maine to own and operate the Biddeford A&W fast-food restaurant. This is where he met his wife, Georgia (Drakoulakos) Button. The two of them sold the A&W to purchase the Biddeford Dairy Queen, which they again, owned and operated. After working as a business man for more than 25 years, he and his wife sold the Dairy Queen and retired in 1987.

His love for golf attracted him to work as a starter and ranger at Dutch Elm Golf Course in Arundel, post retirement. He and Georgia soon moved to their summer home in the mountains of Vermont, where they played golf and enjoyed the outdoors. He was proud to have recently celebrated his 50th year hunting on his land “on the hill.” He and Georgia lived in Florida during the winter, settling into their home in Lady Lake 18 years ago.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Georgia; one son, John “Jeff”; two daughters, Kelly and Kimberly; one brother, Vaughn; four grandchildren, Kelsey, Alyssa, Sarah and Olivia; and several nieces, nephews, special in-laws and friends.

A celebration of Jack’s life for relatives and friends will take place later in summer or fall in the mountains of Vermont at the family’s private cemetery. During the last years of Jack’s life, his energy had been directed toward keeping the members of his EJHS Class of 1955 connected and meeting at yearly reunions. His special project was fundraising to make it possible for all class members to attend the 60th reunion in 2015. To honor Jack’s memory and to try to make his final wishes a reality, donations may be made to the EJHS Class of 1955, c/o Elizabeth Ivy, 1 Coggeshall Circle, Middletown, RI 02842.
