VERO BEACH, Fla. — Joseph C. Souza, 93, formerly of Biddeford, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, after a brief illness.
He had been a resident of Vero Beach for six years.
Joseph was born in Somerville, Mass. on Oct. 12, 1920, the son of Joseph and Mary (Lawrence) Souza.
He graduated from Somerville High School in 1938.
Enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he proudly served aboard the USS Marblehead during World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy.
Joe retired in 1992 after working more than 40 years in sales. After one year, he came out of retirement and worked for Hertz for 20 years.
He loved the ocean, horses and dancing, and was an active member of his community in Vero Beach.
Joe was preceded in death by: his wife, Priscilla “Babe” Vaughan Souza in 1960; his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Charles; and two sisters, Dolores and Adelaide.
He is survived by: one sister, Mary Portais of Plymouth, Mass.; four children, Richard Souza and his wife Mary of Kennebunk, Penny Fifield and her husband Stanley of Biddeford, Janet Kohl and her husband Helmut of Kennebunkport and Robert Souza and his wife Tammy of Durham; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Maine at a later date. The family suggests that memorials be made to VNA Hospice, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or to the hospice of your choice.
