BIDDEFORD — Norwood P. Grant, 81, of Biddeford, died on March 11, 2014 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Gardiner on July 25, 1932, a son of Earle L. and Evelyn (Scott) Grant.

He attended schools in Gardiner and was a 1952 graduate of Gardiner High School.

He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952-56. He was stationed aboard the Attack Transport USS Sanborn and was honorably discharged on Oct. 18, 1956, with the rank of petty officer third class.

On June 11, 1955, he married Margaret A. Monroe. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1983.

On April 20, 1985, he married Judith K. Luce at St. Joseph Church in Gardiner. They were separated in 2007. He will always be remembered by Judy and her children.

Norwood worked for 16 years with Samuel Lipman and Sons in Augusta. He then went on to work for four years as manager of Shop and Save Supermarket in Augusta. For 28 years, he worked as a supply technician for the National Guard, retiring on July 25, 1992.

He enjoyed reading and playing beano.

He was a member of the 50 Plus Club in Biddeford, a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion in Gardiner.

From March 2013 to the present, Norwood was a resident at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough. During this year, he made many great friends with the staff and residents of the vet’s home.

Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by: two brothers, his twin Norman Grant on March 7, 2009 and Ronald Grant in 1940.

He is survived by: one son, Ronald E. Grant and his wife Gay of Gardiner; one daughter, Linda L. Laverriere and her husband Brian of Biddeford; one sister, Shirley L. Turner and her husband Gerald of Elyria, Ohio; five grandchildren, Margaret, Joshua and Zachary Laverriere, all of Biddeford, Aaron Grant and his partner Jong Joo Son of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Melody Santos and her husband Tim of Brentwood, N.H.; former wife, Judith Grant; and stepchildren, Maureen, Robert, Stephanie, Sally and Karen and their families.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, nurse assistants and staff at the veterans’ home for the wonderful, loving care that Norwood received.

Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery in Gardiner.
