Drivers navigating roadways all over York County this winter season have experienced some bumps and frost heaves, and navigated some potholes ”“ even though road crews do try to keep them filled.
This week, the Maine Department of Transportation released its work plan for the next three years, delineating which of those roads will receive attention in the near future.
According to the DOT, projects listed for this calendar year are funded and tied to definite schedules, while those for 2015 and 2016 are subject to change.
Here is an alphabetical list of projects on tap for much of York County, and the year they’re scheduled to take place. More details are available at: http://maine.gov/mdot/projects/workplan.
In Acton, two miles of Route 109 are scheduled to be rehabilitated in 2015-16; estimated at $2.6 million.
In Alfred, paving is scheduled for a portion of Kennebunk Road, but no year is listed. Cost is $11,800.
In Alfred, Lyman and Waterboro, 7.66 miles of Route 202 are scheduled for paving in 2015-16, at $1.9 million.
In Arundel, installation of a right-turn lane at Hill Road and Route 111, a reconfiguration of New Road at the intersection with Route 111, and a passing lane on Route 111 are scheduled for 2015-16, with a combined cost of about $3 million.
Various drainage maintenance projects in Parsonsfield, Lebanon, Newfield, Shapleigh, Alfred, Waterboro, Hollis and Sanford are scheduled for 2014 and estimated at $226,000.
Four projects are scheduled for the Biddeford Municipal Airport. Three scheduled for this year include a security gate, fencing and an easement acquisition, totaling $600,000, and a 2015-16 project to remove runway obstructions is pegged at $309,000.
Other Biddeford projects this year include a $426,000 earmark for a pedestrian bridge at Factory Island; “mill and fill” paving on Route 111 estimated at $784,000; and with paving on West and South streets ”“ all totaling about $359,000; and another West Street project at $720,000. For 2015-16 in Biddeford, there’s reconstruction of a portion of Main Street at $1.2 million and paving on Jefferson and Precourt streets at about $617,000.
This year, there’s about $438,000 on tap for public transit operating assistance and $260,000 for construction of an 854-foot rail siding, also in Biddeford.
Paving for parts of Route 1 in Biddeford and Saco is on the 2014 schedule, and at $1.4 million and there’s an Elm Street bridge rehabilitation project set for 2015-16 at $200,000. Also in 2015-16, there’s $11.2 million earmarked for Route 1 improvements in the two cities.
In 2015-16, Dayton is poised to see a realignment of Route 35 and Hight Road at the Route 5 intersection, at $775,000.
In 2014, Canal Bridge on Route 4A in Hollis is set for replacement at $2.26 million, along with the Bar Mills Bridge, also on Route 4A, at $8.3 million.
In Kennebunk, there’s $250,000 set aside for a traffic-activated signal at Route 9A and Route 99 this year. In 2015-16, Bartlett Bridge on Route 1 at the Kennebunk-Arundel town line is scheduled for replacement, at $2.3 million and the Mathew Lanigan bridge is scheduled for replacement, at $2.1 million. As well, there’s $80,000 earmarked for replacing flashing beacons in a couple of locations in Kennebunk and Wells.
In Kennebunkport, $247,000 is earmarked for overlay on Route 9 this year.
In Sanford and Lebanon, $3.6 million is earmarked for paving on Route 202 this year.
In Limerick, guardrails will be installed on County Bridge over Holland Brook, at $65,000.
In Lyman, $900,000 is earmarked for a passing lane on Route 111 near Route 35 this year, and in 2015-16, $90,000 for intersection improvements on Route 111 at Kennebunk Pond Road intersection.
On Newfield Road in Shapleigh, $221,000 is earmarked this year for paving to the Ross Corner intersection.
Donnells Bridge on Route 1 at the Ogunquit-Wells town line is pegged at $11.9 million and set for this year.
Old Orchard Beach and Saco are expected to see work on a bicycle and pedestrian path from Thornton Academy to Moody Street this year, but no cost estimate is provided. In 2015-16, a traffic signal upgrade and traffic islands are planned for intersection of Saco Avenue and E. Emerson Cummings Boulevard in Old Orchard Beach, but no cost was attached.
In Saco, $70,000 has been set aside for a joint MDOT and Maine Turnpike Authority study of the existing traffic conditions at Route 112 and at I-195, with a view to a new interchange. As well this year, there’s $2.6 million for paving projects on Cascade Road, Spring Street, Old Orchard Road and I-195, and $340,000 for other work on I-195. In 2015-16, there’s $995,000 earmarked for work on Route 5 in Saco ”“ but there’s also paving work scheduled for Route 5 this year in Saco, Biddeford, Dayton, Hollis and Lyman, at $1.7 million.

At Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, $257,000 is set aside for resurfacing and $145,000 to update the master plan in 2014, and plans for snow removal equipment and a realignment of a security fence in 2015-16, but no estimates are attached.
Road reconstruction projects in Sanford include work on Route 202, and 11A and 4, totaling about $1.7 million and $175,000 for signal improvements at 13 locations this year. In 2015-16, some minor work on School Street is planned, estimated at $21,000.
Rehabilitation is set for this year on a portion of Shapleigh Corner Road, at $150,000.
Paving projects on Route 5 and Townhouse Road in Waterboro, totaling $400,000, are estimated, but no year is given, though Stinson Bridge on Route 5 is earmarked for replacement in 2015 or 2016, at $2.5 million.
Projects in Wells for 2014 include intersection improvements at Route 1 and 109, Mile Road and Route 9B for about $665,000 ; and in 2015-16, $855,600 for Route 1 paving and reconstruction of Chapel Road intersection.
York County Community Action Corporation is scheduled to receive about $1.3 million in operating assistance for rural and urban transit and $133,000 for equipment and maintenance this year; $625,000 for rural and urban transit; and about $550,000 for capital equipment in 2015-16.
