On Monday, Jan. 27 at 9:40 p.m., Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholas Mangino observed a 1998 Chevy truck accelerating rapidly from the intersection of route 302 and 114 in downtown Naples.

According to a sheriff’s office press release, Mangino attempted to overtake the truck as it proceeded toward Casco. The truck turned onto Route 35 then into the lot of the Naples shopping center. The operator, later identified as Daniel Lajoie, 62, of Naples, exited the vehicle and fled on foot and started running down a sidewalk in front of the Umbrella Factory. Lajoie was located crouched down behind a wooden pillar near the shopping center entrance.

Lajoie was transported to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland where he was charged with criminal speeding, refusing to stop for a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest and detention and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs. Lajoie is scheduled for a Feb. 18 court appearance.
