On Monday morning, a gym full of energetic students at Canal Elementary School in Westbrook clapped, stomped and cheered for their school secretary, June Lentz, who had just been awarded the Maine Principals’ Association Maine School Secretary of the Year award.
At the assembly full of students, teachers and Westbrook schools administration, Lentz, a longtime secretary at Canal, was surprised by the honor, but attributed her award to the students.
“You guys are the rock stars,” she said to the seated students. “You are the reason I enjoy coming to work every day. There are also great, professional people behind me. I’m really honored.”
Kathryn Hersom, a former principal at Canal and now the No Child Left Behind coordinator for the school district, nominated Lentz for the award.
Jeanne Crocker, assistant executive director of the Maine Principals’ Association, was on hand Monday morning to honor Lentz with the award.
Lentz will soon be honored at two separate events in March, first at the annual Secretaries’ Seminar in Portland on March 12, followed by an honor at the MPA’s Spring Conference Awards Banquet on March 27, at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.
