AUGUSTA — After anchoring an offensive line that was among the best in the state this past fall, Sanford senior Jed Scott has been named the recipient of the Frank J. Gaziano Lineman of the Year award.
Scott, a two-way lineman who started at left tackle on offense and defensive tackle, received the honor during a ceremony on Saturday afternoon at the Augusta Civic Center.
The award is given annually to the senior top offensive and defensive linemen in the state based on their “strong leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” and is named after Gaziano, a longtime Portland businessman and All-American lineman in college at Holy Cross whose family founded the award after he passed away in January 2010.
The award was created partly as a lineman-only alternative to the James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy, which has only been awarded to one lineman in its 42-year history.
Luke Washburn, a member of Oak Hill’s Class D state championship team, received the equivalent defensive award.
Greg Grinnell of Cheverus Ethan Liberty of Skowhegan were the other finalists in the offensive category, while Colin Richards of Mt. Blue and Jacob Fogel of Portland were the runners-up on defense.
Scott is the third player from York County to be named a Gaziano winner in the four-year history of the award, joining Thornton Academy’s Luke Libby (2012 defense) and Bobby Begin (2013 offense) in the exclusive club of eight linemen in the Gaziano winners club.
The award also includes a $5,000 scholarship for Scott, who hopes to play at the Division II level in college.
The Sanford lineman also named to the SMAA All-Conference offensive first team each of the past two years, and was one of three Spartans named to the conference’s all-academic team last fall.
