AUGUSTA — Biddeford edged out Marshwood by less than two points to win the Class A West cheerleading title on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Tigers finished with a total combined score of 148.4 to just beat out the Hawks’ 146.8 and win their second regional title in three years.

Biddeford will be looking to win its first state championship since 2010 when the Tigers compete at the State Championships on Feb. 8 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Boys Basketball

Cheverus 62, Biddeford 31

BIDDEFORD — Cheverus opened up what was a one-point halftime lead with a 25-6 run in the third quarter on the way to a victory over Biddeford in an SMAA boys basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Gym.

Zordan Holman scored 14 points to lead the Stags (7-7), who also got 12 points from Noah Stebbins and eight from Brad Carney.

Corey Creeger scored a game-high 17 points for the Tigers (0-15), while Will Durkin added five and Mike Kilby chipped in three points and nine rebounds.

Girls Basketball

Thornton Academy 52, Bonny Eagle 24

SACO — Ashley Howe scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists and Thornton used a stifling defensive effort to top Bonny Eagle in an SMAA girls basketball game on Friday night at Linnell Gymnasium.

Katie McCrum also scored 11 points for the Golden Trojans (11-2), who didn’t allow more than seven points in any quarter.

Isabella Robinson and Olivia Shaw both chipped in eight points as well, with Shaw also totaling six rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

Elizabeth Bushey, Rebecca Howell and Cassidy Emery all scored four points to lead the Scots (3-10).

Wrestling

WATERBORO — Massabesic got convincing victories over visiting Portland, Westbrook and Scarborough to dominate a quad-meet on Saturday morning.

The Mustangs defeated the Bulldogs 54-29, the Blue Blazes 67-24 and the Red Storm 72-10.

The Mustangs’ Tanner Andrews won all three of his 220-poind matches by pins, with Trevor Burns pulling the same trick at 170 pounds and Logan Martin doing likewise at 145.

Jordan Drain won both of his contested 285-pound matches by pin, while freshman Trevor Walton won two of his 182-pound matches with pins and the other by a 13-5 points decision.

For Portland, defending 106-pound state champion Kidayer Aljubyly won his 100th high school match during the meet, becoming the first wrestler in the school’s history to achieve the milestone.
