Speakout

On Thursday, Jan. 23, Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local channel 7 at 7 p.m. This month’s guests will include Donna Chapman and Bob Muir. One topic for discussion will be the Lowell Preserve. Viewers can call in questions during the program at 892-0546. You are also welcome to come to the Windham Town Hall Council Chambers and be a part of the audience.

Time for Supper

Cornerstone Assembly of God, located on Cottage Road Windham, will host its monthly bean supper this Saturday, Jan. 18, 5-6:30 p.m. There will be two different types of beans as well as several, salads, casseroles, rolls and plenty of dessert. Let There be Light

On Saturday, Jan. 18, a program about the history of lanterns and lights of all kinds, will be presented at 9 a.m. at the Windham Public Library. Windham Historical Society Vice President David Tanguay will discuss the subject and display many of the historic types of lanterns used on land and sea. The public is invited; refreshments will be available and a $5 donation is suggested. All proceeds further the educational outreach and development of Windham’s only museum and history park.

Food Drive

The Windham PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) Outreach will hold a food drive on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Walmart to benefit Windham Food Pantry.

Blues Concert

Music with a Mission will present a popular bluegrass quartet called Jerks of Grass, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the North Windham Union Church. Fiddler Melissa Bragdon of Windham will be featured. Tickets are $12 and $10 at the door.

Loan Closet Plea

The Windham Loan Closet is in need of commodes and rollators (wheeled walkers

with seats). If you have one you are no longer using please call the Town Office at 892-1907 to arrange to have it delivered. The Loan Closet provides loans of medical equipment to any resident in need, free of charge.

Services for Veterans

Veterans Service Officer will be available at Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m.-noon. The center is in back of Windham Mall. Take the road by Friendly’s Ice Cream, off Route 302, and go all the way to the end.

Sledding party

On Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1-3 p.m., the Windham Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a family sledding party at the Lowell Preserve sledding hill behind the fire station, Falmouth Road. Come join in for some winter fun with tubing races, a candy hunt in snow, a bonfire and free hot cocoa. There will be snowshoes to try out so you can take a short hike on the trails. Tubes will be provided for the tube races for all ages that start at 1 p.m. To reserve your spot so they can plan for all the treats and activities, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 892-1905 by Jan. 16. The ice rink at Manchester School is open from dawn-9 p.m. on weekends and during the week, from after school until 9 p.m. Call the Parks and Recreation Department, 892-1905, for an update on the ice condition. The Parks Dept. also has snowshoes for all ages, which can be loaned out to any resident, free of charge. Sign them out at town hall, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or sledding available on the 300-acre Lowell Preserve on Falmouth Road near the fire station. Parking available.

Chili Challenge

Register by Monday, Jan. 20, if you’re planning to enter the 4th annual Great Chili Challenge hosted by the Windham Community Garden. The application fee is $15. Call 892-7192 or visit www.windhamcommunitygarden.org for rules and more information. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. Tasters may pay at the door, $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Debora Luce, a fourth-grade teacher at Manchester Elementary School in North Windham, was honored as teacher of the year at the State of Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars Banquet held Sunday, Jan. 11, in Winslow. Luce won the 2013 Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for grades K-5 for her many efforts to raise awareness of citizenship and the nation’s military, both in and out of the classroom. In August, she will represent Maine at the national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
