Girl Scouts Keeping Busy
Three Raymond Girl Scouts troops came together to provide caroling for the annual Christmas Fair at the Raymond Village Community Church on Dec. 7. In addition to the caroling, the girls have been busy with community service events including participating in a community food drive and donating to/preparing Thanksgiving baskets for the community.
Girl Scout cookies are on sale for the next couple of months and they are now officially taking orders! For more information on the Raymond Girl Scouts or to place a cookie order, contact Caj MacDonald at cmacdon3@maine.rr.com.
Sinatra Lives
Raymond Village Community Church will be hosting an Italian dinner and piano bar on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Here’s a chance for mom and dad to enjoy a date taking a walk back in time, with childcare thrown in! RVCC will provide childcare and a macaroni & cheese supper for just $5 per child when parents buy tickets to attend the Italian dinner/piano.
For adults (with or without kids) an Italian dinner and dessert are served followed by pianist/vocalist Karen Strange playing music of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, timeless show tunes, and more than a few classics from the Chairman of the Board Frank Sinatra. Lyrics will be provided so plan to join in and sing along if you want. Advance tickets only. Tickets for the Italian dinner/piano bar are $10 per person. For adult tickets, childcare reservations, or more information, call 939-7947.
RVCC is located at 27 Main St. (Route 121, just north of Route 302), Raymond Village. The snow date is Saturday, Jan. 25.
Backpack Food Program
Did you know that it is estimated that 15 percent of households in Maine are food insecure? In Regional School Unit 14, they are working to help those children through the Backpack Food Program. Each week, more than 140 students in the district receive a bag of food to provide them with healthy breakfasts, snacks and lunches through the weekend. This program is supported through the generous donations of local businesses and families in the community as well as the support of Good Shepherd Food Bank and Hannaford grocery stores. But they need your help. Volunteers are needed to assist with some of the packing on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Windham Middle School Cafeteria.
Packing begins at 8:30 a.m. and goes to 10 a.m. If you are interested in helping or learning more, contact Michelle Jordan at wpsvolunteer@gmail.com.
Library Book Club
Patricia Herman’s book, “The Midwife of Hope River,” has been chosen for discussion in January at the Raymond Village Library. The story takes place in Appalachia during the Depression with midwife Patience Murphy escorting mothers through the challenges of bringing children into the world. She takes the jobs that no one else wants, helping those most in need – and least able to pay. Patience faces nearly insurmountable difficulties – from the dangerous mines of West Virginia to the terrifying attentions of the Ku Klux Klan, all while trying to bring new light and life into an otherwise hard world.
The book is available upon request at the library and organizers invite all interested readers to join them at the library on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. for a lively discussion. For more information, call the library at 655-4283.
