Bill Diamond, of Windham, announced Thursday that he is running for the state Senate in District 26, which includes the towns of Windham, Standish, Raymond, Casco, Baldwin and Frye Island.

Diamond, who is a former Maine Secretary of State, served in the Maine Senate from 2004-2012 until he was term-limited.

“The political fighting in Augusta must end if our state is to move forward,” said Diamond in a press release on the announcement. “I understand the issues we face and have a record of working with people of all political persuasions for my district and our state.”

Diamond, a former political columnist for the Lakes Region Weekly, authored “The Evil and the Innocent,” a book about children who have been or are being sexually abused.

Diamond is also a local businessman who has founded or co-founded six small businesses in the Windham area since 1980, one of which was The Suburban News, which was bought by Current Publishing, owner of the Lakes Region Weekly, in 2003.

Diamond is also a former teacher and school administrator in Windham and Raymond. In 2008, he initiated and co-founded Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a local volunteer organization that raises funds from donations to buy heating fuel for local people who have no other options to stay warm during the coldest months of the year.

“Protecting and rescuing sexually abused children, improving health care opportunities for everyone, developing a state budget that keeps taxes down – especially local property taxes – supporting local education and assisting small businesses so they can succeed are my top priorities,” Diamond said.
