SACO — Clayton W. Fernald, 92, of Saco, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Eliot on Sept. 1, 1921, a son of Percy and Betsy (Cole) Fernald.
He was educated at Eliot High School.
Clayt served his country in the United States Coast Guard for four years during World War II.
Earlier, he was employed by Boston & Maine Railroad for several years. Later, he worked for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for more than 50 years, retiring in 1984.
He enjoyed gardening, tinkering in his garage and going to yard sales. He was an avid hunter, who also had a great love of wildlife.
Mr. Fernald was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury in Old Orchard Beach.
He was preceded in death by: two brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by: his wife of 44 years, Janet (MacGarvey) Fernald; eight children, Sandra Hoffman and her husband Michael, Roxy Whitaker, Gale Pergande and her husband Albert, Sue Smith and her husband Walter, Peter Nicholas and his wife Angela, Stacey Hittle, Christopher Fernald and his partner Stevan Briley, and Jennifer Maurice; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at St. Augustine of Canterbury, 156 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the Saco Food Pantry, P.O.
