BIDDEFORD — Robert O. Charette, 89, of West Hartford, Conn., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014 at Brighton Gardens of Tampa.
Born and raised in Biddeford, the son of the late Alcide and Elmire (Letendre) Charette, Bob graduated from Saint Louis High School, Class of 1943.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
While home on leave in July of 1945, he met Medora “Dodie” Morin and a courtship began.
He returned to Maine after his enlistment ended and worked as a driver for Greyhound Bus Line and York County Biscuit.
On Thanksgiving morning of 1952, he and Dodie married, and the couple moved to Hartford, Conn.
Bob took a position as a letter carrier with the United States Post Office and worked in the Hartford area until his retirement in 1989.
In 1969, he, Dodie and their daughter, Elaine, moved to West Hartford.
Bob was a communicant at Saint Peter Claver Church, a loyal member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and a fan of the Hartford Whalers and
New York Yankees.
He was a family man who took care of what he needed to do and was a supportive grandfather.
In 2008, Dodie preceded him in death after 56 years of marriage.
He was also preceded in death by: his brothers, Roland, Leo Paul and Normand.
Bob leaves: his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Douglas McIntyre of Tampa, Fla.; his grandchildren, Ryan McIntyre, who is stationed in Virginia with the U.S. Army, and Kelly McIntyre of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; his great-granddaughter, Ryliegh Ranee McIntyre of Denver, Colo.; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Victor Mathieu.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 with a procession at 9:30 a.m. from the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford, Conn., followed by a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St. in West Hartford. Burial with military honors will be at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford.
