SACO — Katherine G. Caravasios, 90, of Saco and formerly of Biddeford, died on Jan. 6, 2014 at The Monarch Center in Saco.
She was born on Oct. 30, 1923 in Nashua, N.H., a daughter of Rev. Demetrios and Mary (Angoro-giannis) Gollaros.
She attended Biddeford schools.
During World War II, she worked as a welder in the South Portland Shipyard.
On June 24, 1962, she married George P. Caravasios of Miami, at St. Demetrios Church in Biddeford. He preceded her in death in 1979.
In 1962, Katherine moved to Miami. She worked for many years at the water department and then went on to open her own gift store called “The Athenian.”
She was a member of the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute in Miami. and a board member of St. Athanasios Church, also in Miami. Katherine was a member and past grand president of the Daughters of Penelope. Katherine volunteered for nonprofit organizations in Miami.
She is survived by: two sisters, Anna Gollaros and Angelike Pallas, both of Biddeford; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Bradley St., Saco, ME 04072.
