GORHAM – A Limington man, who Gorham police suspect of hitting a woman with a vehicle following an argument and leaving the scene Nov. 26, is free on bail and faces a court date in February.
Jeremy Whynot, 35, surrendered on Dec. 1 after Gorham Police Department, who had been searching for Whynot, had a warrant for his arrest on a charge of domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
“He turned himself in on Sunday afternoon and was taken to jail,” Gorham Police Chief Ronald Shepard said on Monday.
Gorham Sgt. Michael Nault arrested Whynot at the Gorham Police Department, Lt. Christopher Sanborn said on Tuesday.
Shepard said Whynot was arraigned on Monday afternoon. A spokeswoman at Cumberland County Jail said on Tuesday that Whynot was released at 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 on $5,000 cash bail.
Sanborn said in a report that Gorham police responded to Maple Ridge Road at 8:21 p.m. on Nov. 26 after receiving a call that a woman had been struck by a vehicle. “Upon arrival officers learned that the victim was a Gorham woman that was Jeremy’s ex-fiance?e,” Sanborn said in the report.
The officers who responded were Dean Hannon and Ted Hatch.
Sanborn said officers were informed that a verbal argument had broken out between the two. Police alleged in the report that Whynot struck the victim with a gray, 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, “sending her airborne and landing on her back before he fled the scene.”
Police said the victim was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland and was released the next morning with minor injury. Sanborn said on Tuesday that no one else was injured in the incident.
The spokeswoman at the jail said Whynot faces a court appearance on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
