As my family prepares to depart for a two-year work contract in Australia, I cannot help but take stock of the place I call home. I think my third-grader summed it up well the other morning as we drove to school. We were just taking a left from Main onto School Street (where the Flag Ladies stand every Tuesday) when he piped up from the back seat with the following declaration, “Freeport really has everything you need.”

And while we have said our goodbyes with laughter (and a few tears) to those who inhabit our lives intimately, I realize there are people and institutions who may not know how much they will be missed.

I will miss the caring, informed, upbeat women who staff our lovely library. With her keen observations, Mary is able to recommend books my son devours. And Holly and Joanne always know just where those pesky authors lie when I cannot seem to locate them.

I will miss the aesthetically appealing, ever social, and equally well-staffed and stocked Bow Street Market. Mel regularly appears in the nick of time with a smile or balloon for my 4-year-old.

I will miss the talented teachers, the array of classes, the multigenerational aspect, and the congenial feel of the Casco Bay YMCA. Barbie and Paula always offer a smile or warm welcome – no matter the weather.

I will miss the sight of the belted Galloway cows and calves on South Freeport Road. Every time I attempt to vary my running route, I find I cannot because I simply must get a fix of those beautiful bovines.

I will miss the farm fresh vegetables grown by Lisa and Ralph of Laughingstock Farm.

I will miss First Step and Mast Landing and all the teachers who educate and inspire my children.

I will miss visits to Wolfe’s Neck Farm to check out the animals with my children.

I will miss summertime concerts – bayside at Winslow and nestled next to “the boot” in town.

And I will miss countless other friendly faces.

While we remain excited and optimistic about our adventure Down Under, I only hope our quality of life there will be as good as it is right here. And I know, two years hence, we will look forward to our return home.
