Veterans Support
Jerry Smith, the Veterans Service Officer, will hold office hours on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Windham Veterans Center. He has been in his current position for three and a half years and worked in the Veterans Employment Office prior to becoming a VSO. He will be available the second and fourth Wednesdays except for holidays, each month.
Holiday Craft Fair
On Saturday, Nov. 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Harmony Masonic Hall, Cressey Road, Gorham, the Friends of the Former South Windham Library and Tri-Town Extension will hold a Holiday Craft Fair including handmade raffle baskets, baked goods, crafts and much more.
Cancer Support Group Meets
This support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Windham Public Library. This is an informal gathering open to all people in the area who have been touched by cancer. The mission is to provide support and education for all cancer victims, survivors and caregivers. A relaxed and enjoyable meeting atmosphere is promised. For more information, go to Facebook.
New Book
My latest book about Windham and its past has been received from the publisher. Called “The Days Gone By,” it includes writings of the late Charles Legrow about the settlement of the Gray Road from the rotary to the Gray line. Also included are biographies of some of the town folks including Walter Reeves, Aaron Hanson, John Andrew, Tony Pecoraro and Flora Lamb. Free Community Thanksgiving
Food and Fellowship, Inc is offering their annual Monday Meal Thanksgiving Dinner. Everyone is welcome and it is free to the community. Dinner will be Monday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at North Windham Union Church, Route 302, North Windham.
Library Tea
On Tuesday, Dec. 3, the Windham Public Library hosts an informal tea in the meeting room. All are welcome to this relaxing afternoon, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Medicare Information
On Tuesdays, Dec. 3 and 17, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A Medicare seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday through Dec. 7, Medicare Open Enrollment Period, as well as one on Dec 17. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for the upcoming seminars or to make one-on-one appointments with Medicare Advocates at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will continue at the same times and location on first and third Tuesdays of the month in 2014. Toy Workshop and Christmas Baskets
Each year, Windham Food Pantry provides a Toy Workshop for qualified families so they can select a variety of toys. Sign-up for this will start on Monday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. and will run through Dec. 12. Also, Christmas food baskets will be available and sign up for these is the same dates. The Clothes Closet is accepting gently used, clean, warm winter clothing and the Food Pantry welcomes donations of funds and food. Call Colette at 892-1931 for more information.
Christmas Luncheon for Seniors
Reservations are due Dec. 2 for a Christmas luncheon planned for Monday, Dec. 16, at 11:30 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. The Lakes Region Senior Center members and guests will enjoy a catered buffet of turkey and pasta, salad, potato, stuffing, gravy, veggies, desserts and beverage. Carol singing will follow with games, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Members are encouraged to invite guests. Christmas Fair
A “Made in Maine” Christmas Fair will be held on Dec. 7 and 8 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Roosevelt Trail. Hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 8 and 11:30 a.m.-1:20 p.m. on Dec. 8. Gift baskets, baked goods, raffles for museum visits, restaurants, spas, theater, vintage quilt and a furnished dollhouse. Breakfast and lunch available; homemade food to go.
Chamber Singers Concert
Tickets are on sale at www.windhamchambersingers.com, for the annual “An American Family Holiday,” Saturday, Dec. 7, at Windham Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10-$30 and the concert features the Windham Chamber Singers, Ashley Liberty, Daniel Strange and Norm Lewis.
