Frost Gully Gallery, 1159 Route 1 in Freeport, will show new paintings by the Maine painter, illustrator and author Dahlov Ipcar.

A reception will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the gallery, one mile north of L.L. Bean. The exhibit will run through Dec. 28.

Ipcar, 96, is best known for her colorful, kaleidoscopic-styled paintings of animals – in either farm or wild settings. She has produced 20 new paintings over the past two years. The gallery will display those, along with a selection of Giclee reproductions and lithograph prints by the artist.

“The artist continues to present new ideas within the context that she has been working in for over 70 years,” a press release said of her work. “Together, these new paintings present a whimsical, fascinating tour through the Ipcar world that we are quite familiar with. But there are many surprises.

“In ‘Night-at-Arms’ it looks as though she created the subject – not just interpreted it. In ‘Arrival’ the animals exchanged their spots and stripes – a wonderful and interesting manipulation of our sense of perception.

“The whole composition is so alive and joyful and all the devices that the artist has employed work together in producing a painting that is simply a great experience,” the press release said.
