Thumbs up to the local survivors of domestic violence abuse who shared their stories as part of the Survivor Stories Project, which was performed Thursday, and will be again this week, to help spread awareness and raise funds for Caring Unlimited, a Sanford-based nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence.
The Survivor Stories Project was performed earlier this month in York, last week in Biddeford and will be performed Wednesday in Sanford because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We hope area residents will take the time, if they haven’t already, to see the Survivor Stories Project on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church at 5 Lebanon St. in Sanford. Tickets are $5 in advance, or $10 at the door, and can be purchased online at http://dvamyorkcounty.eventbrite.com or by calling 490-3227, ext. 107. By sharing their experiences of domestic violence, these individuals can help others in the county realize that this is a serious societal blight that exists ”“ and it’s happening right here.
Thumbs down to the continuing dispute between the York County Budget Committee and county commissioners over the budget committee members’ refusal to sign a county ethics policy and the resulting censure of that committee by the commissioners. It appears the budget committee’s lawsuit will go to trial, as its lawyer filed its brief in court the week before last. The county’s attorney has 20 days to respond to the brief on behalf of the commissioners, and oral arguments in the case may begin by the end of the year in York County Superior Court in Alfred. It’s unfortunate that this issue is continuing to cost the county and taxpayers money, and that it could not be resolved out of court. This issue needs to be resolved quickly and then put to bed.
Thumbs up to the Maine Hockey Group for securing an option on city-owned land in Saco. This news could eventually lead to The Portland Pirates playing hockey in a brand new ice arena on the Lund Road property ”“ in a best-case scenario for this small York County city. The 12.85-acre parcel is nearby the company’s MHG Ice Center, also located on Lund Road, where the Portland Junior Pirates play, making it an ideal location. Saco and Biddeford are also serious hockey towns, with talented, championship high school hockey teams, making the area a perfect place for the Pirates to call home. Although nothing is set in stone, we hope Maine Hockey Group will make the move to Saco in the future, linking up the parts of the Pirates organization and drawing a captive audience of hockey fans to its games.
Thumbs down to the lack of answers in the case of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds. The 20-month-old went missing from the Waterville home of her father, Justin DiPietro, in December 2011. Since that time, the Maine Department of Public Safety has commenced numerous searches and investigated what could have happened to the little girl, but with no solid information or real answers for her family. We hope police are able to find out what happened to Ayla soon and close this case, and hopefully give some peace of mind to her family.
