Buxton installs meds collection box

The Buxton Police Department recently installed a special drop-off box in its lobby to help citizens dispose of unwanted prescription medications. The box is located in the lobby, which is open around the clock, at the police department, 185 Portland Road.

“It’s easy access,” Police Chief Michael Grovo said.

Items approved for deposit in the unit include prescription medications and ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and pet medications. Items excluded include thermometers, needles, aerosol cans, inhalers, medications from businesses or clinics, and hydrogen peroxide.

The box cost the department $900.

“It’s a tool the public can use,” Grovo said. “They don’t need to talk with an officer.”
