Meetings
Pownal selectmen will meet Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Pownal Planning Board agenda for its meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16, includes: New Business: Spatial Alternatives zoning map, John Schwanda of Owen Haskell Inc. The meeting will be at Mallett Hall at 7 p.m.
The Planning Board will hold an ongoing review of Ordinances: Subdivision Ordinance, Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 8-9:30 a.m., at Mallett Hall, Old Selectmen’s Office. All Planning Board meetings, on-site inspections and workshops are open to the public.
The Pownal Conservation Committee will meet Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at Mallett Hall.
CEO office hours changed
Effective Oct. 10, the Code Enforcement Office hours have changed to Thursdays from 5:30- 7 p.m. As always, the code officer, Barbara Skelton, can be reached by email at ceo@pownalmaine.org.
Kids Krusade Oct. 20
The First Parish Congregational Church, Hallowell Road in Pownal, will hold a Kids Krusade on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m.-noon. There will be Bible stories, games, crafts, snacks and prizes. All children are welcome. For transportation or for more information, call 688-4846 or 688-4791.
Dams and the Royal River
The Royal River Conservation Trust, Maine Rivers and the town of Yarmouth are hosting a public informational session on recent studies regarding the future of two dams on the Royal River owned by the town of Yarmouth, Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7-9 p.m., at the Log Cabin, 196 Main St., Yarmouth.
Fisheries and ecological implications extend upriver along the Royal and its tributaries to Pownal, Freeport, North Yarmouth, New Gloucester, Gray and Auburn. Paddling implications extend upriver to North Yarmouth. The informational session comes in advance of an expected public hearing in front of the Yarmouth Town Council in November or December inviting public input on whether to move forward with the removal of one or both dams. Returnables sought to support fire-rescue
The Pownal Fire Co. works to support the Pownal Fire & Rescue Department. In addition to providing food during fires and trainings, the organization purchases work uniforms and equipment for the town’s emergency personnel. The money the fire company is able to donate toward these items helps to keep the fire department’s expenses down. The organization seeks donations of returnable bottles and cans to help fund its work. The Pownal Fire Co. is independent from the town of Pownal and the Pownal Fire and Rescue Department. The bottle building is located behind the town hall.
Men’s breakfast
The Men’s Breakfast at the First Parish Congregational Church of Pownal, 422 Hallowell Road, is held the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the church. It is open to any men who want to come. They do not have to be affiliated with the church. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.

North Pownal United Methodist Church worship service is Sunday at 9 a.m., Sunday School at 10:30. Pastor’s hours are Tuesdays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. (by appointment). Church phone is 688-4938. Church readies beans, spaghetti
On Saturday, Oct. 19, the First Parish Congregational Church 422 Hallowell Road, Pownal, will be hosting a baked beans and spaghetti supper. There are settings at 5 and 6 p.m. Tickets are adults $8, children 5-12 $4, and children under 5 eat free. To reserve tickets, call Lois at 688-4433.
Food pantry on Tuesdays
The North Pownal United Methodist Church food Pantry on 851 Lawrence Road is open every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Organizers never know from week to week what they will be getting, though there usually are different kinds of breads, produce, desserts, etc. All are welcome.
