BRUNSWICK
A group of student volunteers from Bowdoin College and spent “Common Good Day,” Sept. 28, working on projects at Brunswick high school.
Rick Wilson, the school’s Service Learning Program coordinator, arranged for the volunteers to organize props in the Crooker Theater, paint six lacrosse goal posts and organize books in the library. He noted that the group included eight Bowdoin students “and one Brunsick High School volunteer” who happened to be Wilson’s daughter “so, I guess she would argue whether she was a volunteer or not.”
More than 525 college students and 25 faculty took part in the 15th annual Common Good Day. The volunteerism effort was inspired by the 1802 inaugural address of Bowdoin’s first president, Joseph McKeen, who implored the first class to practice for the “common good” rather than the private advantage of education.
