Every spring, our state sees an increase in the number of puppies and kittens entering our local animal shelters. It may surprise people to learn that 50 percent of litters are accidental. The problem is, cats and dogs can get pregnant much earlier than most people think, with some cats going into heat as early as 4 months old and some dogs by 5 months. Littermates can mate with each other, adding to the problem.
Community Spay-Neuter Clinic is rolling out the “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda campaign,” a Spay/Neuter Early, Humane Alliance Campaign, that lets people know the best time to fix puppies and kittens easily and safely is by 4 months old to prevent accidental litters. If people know when to fix their pets, these accidental litters may all but disappear, making a huge difference in the number of animals entering our local animal shelters every year.
