FREEPORT — On Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the “Historic Barns & Quilts Tour,” presented by the Freeport Historical Society, will feature visits to four unique barns built in the early to late 19th century.
Select vintage and antique quilts, organized by theme, will be displayed and discussed at each barn.
Leading the tours are quilt expert Kathy Kenny and barn expert Don Perkins. Highly regarded quilt historian, fiber artist, educator and lecturer Kathy Kenny will share her vast knowledge of vintage quilts.
As the very fabric of rural life, quilts reflect the economy, personal choice, and necessity of life. Those on the tour will deepen their understanding of the economic role of women and how quilt patterns and styles reflect local, regional and national events.
The tour will also examine the shifts in barn construction and how those shifts related to the evolving economic challenges and technological changes confronting farmers in our area.
At 9 a.m., the event begins with coffee and orientation at Cotton Weeds Quilt Shop on U.S. Route 1.
The event is a fundraiser of Freeport Historical Society. Tickets are $35 each, and must be purchased in advance. They can be purchased online at www.freeporthistoricalsociety.org or by check to 45 Main St., Freeport 04032.
