DAMARISCOTTA — Lincoln Theater will host three broadcasts on Thursdays in October that capture and explore major world exhibitions, bringing a wealth of artistic masterpieces to the community via high-tech digital cinema technology. It might be the only chance many have to ever get a close look at some of the world’s greatest works of art.
The first, “Vermeer,” will screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 from the National Gallery in London. The National Gallery is offering a major exhibition on one of the most startling and fascinating artists of all — Johannes Vermeer, who painted little more than 30 works that still exist, and the National Gallery has chosen to focus on his art in relation to music.
The second show, “Manet,” will screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 from the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Finally, “Munch” will screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 from the National Museum & Munch museums in Oslo.
In 2013, all of Norway will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), one of the towering figures of modern art. This is already being hailed as a “once-in-a-lifetime show.” This exhibition is the most ambitious presentation of Munch’s art ever. With 220 paintings it will display the greatest number of Munch’s key works ever.
The series of broadcasts will kick off with a discussion on the role of the arts in creating and sustain communities at noon Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the theater, with three distinguished panelists: Mark Bessire, director of the Portland Museum of Art, Christopher Brownawell, director of the Farnsworth Museum and Suzette McAvoy, director of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport Forum to Focus on Visual Arts in the Community.
The discussion is free and open to the public. Tickets for the Exhibition broadcasts are $15 adults, $13 Lincoln Theater members and $5 for youths age 18 and younger.
