WISCASSET

Henry Heyburn of The Chewonki Foundation will lead a one-hour walk from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 as part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.

The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is a series of events across the state led by outdoor oriented organizations and companies. The goal is to connect friends and neighbors with the natural world to promote fun, physical activity and good health.

Chewonki will participate with an event at Eaton Farm in Wiscasset, beginning in the parking lot at Eaton Farm on Friday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. with a walk along the beautiful Back River Trail — a stunning coastal walk with beautiful views of the shores on Montsweag Bay. The event will take place rain or shine.

Maine Yankee donated the 200-acre Eaton Farm to Chewonki in 2005 as part of a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission settlement agreement. Chewonki agreed to create a nature preserve, maintain public access and foster stewardship of the estuarine environment. The Back River Trail at Eaton Farm got under way in 2005 with 4.5 miles of trail opened to the public in 2006.
