KENNEBUNK — A Wells firefighter was treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland for heat exhaustion as firefighters from several communities fought a blaze at a West Kennebunk home Monday.
Firefighters said the fire appears to have started in the clothes dryer, though it remains under investigation.
The fire destroyed the 153-year-old home, located at the corner of Alfred Road and Mill Street.
Kennebunk Fire Department Division Chief Bill Vandeinse said the four occupants, a mother and her three children, were able to get out safely.
The fire was initially reported as smoke coming from a dryer at 10:07 a.m. At 10:11 a.m., a caller said flames could be seen emanating from the home. The first firefighter at the scene, Capt. Justin Cooper, said there was heavy fire showing when he arrived at 10:12 a.m. and a second alarm was sounded.
Vandeinse said firefighters from Alfred, Arundel, Biddeford, Goodwin’s Mills, Kennebunkport and Wells assisted.
The family, which was renting the home, are staying with friends, said Vandeinse.
