DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors to pay a woman’s legal fees in her battle over prayers at public meetings.
U.S. District Judge Michael Urbanski on Monday ordered the board to pay $53,229 to Barbara Hudson’s attorneys for their fees and expenses stemming from the court battle.
A federal judge issued an injunction in March barring the board from opening meetings with prayers associated with any one religion.
The decision came in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Hudson.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Marshall Ecker told the Danville Register & Bee that the matter of paying the fees would be discussed in a closed session with their attorney, as well as a possible appeal of the injunction.
