BATH — Summer doesn’t last long in Maine, and few of us spent as much time on the water, or near the water, as we’d have liked.
But for those who need one last ocean fix, the Chocolate Church Art Gallery has a perfect solution: “The Sea Around Us” with the art of six Maine artists who likewise felt the tug of the ocean.
Judith Schuppien creates in oils, fauve-style. Her work, “Sebasco Harbor” is typical of her work in this show, with bold lines of bright color.
Rob Smith is a photographer whose stunning pieces include “Rock Bottom”, photo on canvas.
Felicity Sidwell provided small impressionist works, to entice the viewer to enjoy the play of sun and shadow on her subjects.
The curator and artist, kdb, produced small encaustic pieces of birds and fish and shellfish, a bright and whimsical addition to the show.
Amanda Edwards’ stunning pieces in glass, including “Flight of the Jellies,” played with the very idea of the transparency of the sea, and of some of the life within it.
Sculptor Anne Alexander rounds out the exhibit, with a series of ceramic turritella shells, sea snails that are typically medium-sized, but which come in many colors.
Summer’s not over yet.
The Chocolate Church Arts Center gallery is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday the gallery stays open until 7 p.m., and Saturdays noon to 4 p.m. Call 442-8455 for more information.
