A benefit road race — which features color bombs to paint the participants — is scheduled for Aug. 24 at Brunswick Landing.
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, “Color Me Rad” hosts more than 80 races in the United States and Canada each year, all to raise money for different local charities. YMCA of Maine is this year’s local beneficiary.
The local five-kilometer, or 3.1 miles, course starts at Orion Street near the south end of the flight line. It winds a rough figure-eight along Liberty Crossing, Purinton and Neptune drives, and Pegasus Street. The race finishes on Orion Street near Hangar Four.
Along the way, runners pass through five “color stations,” where they are blasted with pastel-hued corn starch concoctions.
By the finish line, they look like survivors of an easter egg factory disaster.
Four waves of racers run the course in 20-minute blocks. The first two waves, starting at 9 and 9:20 a.m. already are sold out; the final two waves – 9:40 a.m. and 10 am. – have slots remaining.
