This statue of Thomas Goodall was created in 1917, paid for by Sanford residents, to mark the 50th anniversary of his establishment of the Sanford Mills. The statue has been a fixture in downtown Sanford ever since, virtually undisturbed for 96 years, until someone recently pried off one of the bronze plaques on its base. TAMMY WELLS/Journal Tribune
