BATH — Hyde School is offering two sessions of its Summer Songwriting Workshop, July 8 to 12 and 15-19, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
The program for aspiring teen songwriters — grades 9 and older — mirrors a yearlong music course offered by Hyde music teacher and local musician Matt Newberg.
What began in 2005 as a senior/parent project for musicians Dan Cook and John Hiatt, both Hyde alumni parents, has now morphed into a respected program that affords students the opportunity to work with renowned musicians such as Cook and Hiatt, as well as Michael McDonald (also a Hyde alumni parent), Chapin Hartford, and Mark Radcliffe — all whom participate on a voluntary basis.
The workshops are the brainchild of Cook, who was the chief creative director for Sony Music Publishing Nashville and has more than 30 years of experience in the music industry working with country music stars such as Brooks and Dunn, Alabama and The Mavericks.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are musically driven and interested in pursuing a career in music to have hands-on experience,” said Newberg.
The cost is $400 per session, and includes lunch, texts and a CD of demos recorded in the studio.
