Hyde School announces its popular summer songwriting workshop for aspiring teenaged songwriters.
The program mirrors a yearlong music course offered by Hyde Music teacher and local musician Matt Newberg.
What began in 2005 as a senior-parent project for musicians Dan Cook and John Hiatt, both Hyde alumni parents, has now morphed into a respected program that affords students the opportunity to work with renowned musicians such as Cook and Hiatt, as well as Michael McDonald, also a Hyde alumni parent; Chapin Hartford; and Mark Radcliffe.
For a five-day period in January, approximately 20 students in Newberg’s class composed original music, cut demos and then performed live at a concert held at the Frontier Café in Brunswick.
In April, a select group of eight students took a weeklong trip to Nashville, Tenn., home to McDonald, Hiatt and Cook, to attend meetings with members of the music industry.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are musically driven and interested in pursuing a career in music to have hands-on experience,” Newberg said.
Hyde’s Summer Songwriting Workshop will be held this year from July 8-12 and from July 15-19.
