Alumni field hockey team practicing
The Freeport High School alumni field hockey players have begun practices for the second annual Field Hockey Alumni Fundraiser. All practices are on Mondays from 6-8 p.m. at the high school field hockey field on Holbrook Street. All are welcome to participate. The next practice is July 1.
Program focuses on tick, mosquito illnesses
Kate Colby, field epidemiologist from Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention, will present general information focused on the prevention of tick-borne infections such as Lyme disease, mosquito-borne infections such as West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and rash caused by brown tail moths, on Wednesday, July 17, from 5-6 p.m. in the Freeport Town Hall Chambers.
The program is sponsored by the town and the Cumberland District of the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention. The session is free and open to the public.
South Freeport church readies for festival
The South Freeport Congregational Church will hold its Summer Festival on Friday, June 28-Sunday, June 30. The festivities start on Friday with the jewelry, clothing and treasures sale from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and a lobster dinner for $20 or lobster and clams for $25 from 5-7 p.m.
On Saturday, there will be a large outdoor flea market, pie, craft and artisan food items sale, along with the jewelry, clothing and treasure sale. Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. featuring a lobster roll for $10 or a hot dog for $5. A sock hop with music, trivia, hula hoops, classic cars, competitions, raffles and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30 will feature a pancake breakfast from 8 -9:30 a.m. under the tent. Spring clean-up days dwindle
Freeport residents have just a few more days in June to take advantage of spring clean-up at the recycling center. The town has sent residents flyers with a coupon for free disposal of one load of waste material at the recycling center, along with a list of acceptable household items. Acceptable material can be brought to the recycling center in June during the normal operating hours: Wednesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Household hazardous waste coupons are also available to the first 100 residents who request them with a limit of one per household. The coupons have a value of $20 toward the cost of disposal of household hazardous waste at the Riverside Recycling Center, which is open the first Saturday of the month from April through November, 7 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Street construction update
The Maine Department of Transportation is re-paving North Main Street and Route 1 between Maple Avenue and I-295 Exit 24. There will be drainage work and new granite curbs on both sides of the road between Maple Avenue and East Street. Delays can be expected, and the project is scheduled to be completed by July 3.
The town will be reconstructing West Street and building a new asphalt sidewalk with granite curb along the north side. The street will be slightly re-aligned and widened for safer use. The project will start by the middle of June and the curb and sidewalk should be completed by the end of September. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and flaggers will be used when necessary.
Community Services seeks lunch help
Freeport Community Services is in need of volunteers to help with the Free Summer Lunch for Kids program. Volunteers are needed to help make sandwiches or deliver them to meal sites for children without summer lunches during the week. Help is also needed in the thrift shop and furniture store as well as other special projects. To volunteer, call Debbie at 865-3985.
Two win USM scholarships
Two Freeport residents have been awarded scholarships from the University of Southern Maine. Katee Poulin, an accounting student, was awarded the George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship. She is a 2011 graduate of Freeport High School and attended Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. She is the daughter of Sue LaPierre and Scott Poulin, both of Freeport. Allison Gray, a graduate student nurse practitioner, was awarded the Martha Skoner Scholarship. She and her husband, Casey Clougherty, reside in Freeport with their three children.
July 4 events announced
The town of Freeport has announced its Fourth of July events for 2013. The day will start with a blueberry pancake and sausage breakfast at St. Jude Hall, on the corner of Main and School streets, from 7-10 a.m. The L.L. Bean 10K Road Race will take place at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Fun Run at 9:15 a.m. The parade will be at 10 a.m. on Main Street from Kendall Lane south to Holbrook Street. The L.L. Bean Discovery Park Concert will be Matt Nathanson at 7:30 p.m. The day will wrap up with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.
Library news and notes
Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
Art in the Library for June features the water-based oil paintings of Betheda Edmonds
The library will hold a New Books and New Series Day on Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m. The presentation invites readers to look at and check out new books and series available at the library.
Explore Maine Lighthouses with educator, historian and entertaining raconteur Bud Warren on Monday, July 8 at 7.p.m.
The Library Book Group’s July selection is “The Host,” by Stephanie Meyer. The group typically meets the first Wednesday of the month but because of the July 4th holiday they will meet on July 10 at 6 p.m.
The Thursday Midday Movie for Thursday, July 11 at 1 p.m. will be “Life of Pi.” Running time is 2 hours, 7 minutes and is rated PG.
