Strough- matt takes listeners on a musical odyssey not so different from his own musical journeys into Creole culture. Born and raised in southeastern Illinois, Stroughmatt later moved to southeast Missouri and spent more than three years learning to speak Illinois Creole French, play the fiddle and sing many of the traditional songs that have permeated the region for more than 300 years.
Taught to play fiddle by local Creole fiddlers in the tradition of their fathers, Stroughmatt gradually became an adopted son of the French Midwest Creoles living alongside the Mississippi River near St. Louis.
The folk magazine, Dirty Linen, has called him “a jawdropping fiddler.”
