SCARBOROUGH – On Monday the Scarborough Fire Department held a swearing-in ceremony for new and reappointed officers in the town’s call company, the pay-per-incident volunteers who augment the department’s full-time staff.
The retirement of Capt. Hank Foster after 23 years will see Brian Smart re-appointed as captain, a position he held for several years before stepping down to raise a family. He will be assisted by Jon Perry, who moves back into the lieutenant’s position, after taking a year off from his leadership position. Capt. Geoff MacLean has also stepped down from his leadership role at the Engine-5/Tank-1 company to focus on his day job, but is expected to stay active in the call company.
Also, Capt. Mike Gallant will transfer to the North Scarborough company, where he started as firefighter, now that he is again living in that district. His transfer will see Lt. Joe Carroll promoted to captain of the Engine-1/Ladder-2 company at Black Point Station.
Officers re-appointed to roles for terms to begin July 1 are: Deputy Chief Gary Sandler, Captain/Safety Officer Bruce Bell, Capt. Richard Lamontagne (Engine-4), Lt. Glen Reed (Engine-4), Lt. Jeff Rogers (Engine-6), Lt. Mike Norton (Engine-7) and Lt. Ellen Pallotta (Canteen).
Fire Chief Mike Thurlow also announced that Jeremy Moreau, Ray Whitney and Marc Martin recently finished the rigorous training process needed to obtain their Emergency Medical Paramedic licenses. Also, the following department members completed a practical end test in Hollis over the June 1-2 weekend to earn their Firefighter II state certification: Firefighters Ian Daly, Ryan Oulette, Mike Price, Mike Stevenson and Eric Twitchell, along with Lt. Alan Nielsen.
