SCARBOROUGH – On Saturday, June 1, Scarborough Land Trust held the dedication and official naming of Elaine Stimson Warren Woods. The land trust purchased the 156-acre parcel from Harvey Warren of Scarborough in December. Warren Woods is located on Payne Road, near Scarborough schools, with frontage on the Nonesuch River, the largest source of fresh water for the Scarborough Marsh. A new kiosk was unveiled at the event.

The property is named for Warren’s late wife, who was a former director and treasurer of the land trust. Their daughter, Becky Seel of Belgrade, was a founding director. In addition to Harvey and Becky, family members who attended the dedication include Dan Warren of Scarborough and Andy Warren of Buxton, both sons of Harvey Warren, and Kelly and Craig Stimson, a cousin.

Acquisition of Warren Woods was led by SLT director Jeremy Wintersteen, who served on the land trust board with Mrs. Warren. The property is an oasis of forests, fields and wetlands less than two miles from the Maine Mall and Oak Hill. Six acres of the parcel will be conveyed to the town for possible use as an active recreation area. Town Manager Tom Hall was among the speakers at the dedication.

In the coming year, the land trust will be developing a plan for trails, which will be created in 2014.

Founded in 1977, Scarborough Land Trust has protected almost 1,200 acres to date, from properties along the renowned Scarborough Marsh to upland parcels that feature open fields, woods, rivers, streams and active farmland. SLT properties with public trails are Fuller Farm, Libby River Farm, Sewell Woods and Broadturn Farm, which includes an active organic farm.

Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) dedicated and officially named Elaine Stimson Warren Woods on Saturday. The 156-acre parcel on Payne Road in Scarborough was sold to the land trust by Harvey Warren of Scarborough, whose late wife Elaine was a former director of the land trust.  Standing, from left, are two of Harvey’s sons, Dan Warren of Scarborough and Andy Warren of Buxton; his daughter, Becky Seel of Belgrade; SLT president Paul Austin; and SLT director Jeremy Wintersteen, who led the acquisition project. Seated are, Harvey Warren, and Phineas Sprague of Cape Elizabeth.
