From Omaha Beach to the back yard

Nine years ago, 82-year-old Ken Dolloff pushed a group of local baseball coaches to set up a summer time baseball league for kids. He bemoaned the fact that, for many kids, baseball each year ends around June 15 when Little League ends. The result was Southern Maine Kids Travel Baseball. Dolloff, a D-Day veteran and stalwart of Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post of Scarborough, saw his idea grown to 15 towns and cities, and 32 teams. Dolloff passed away this past winter. How about a K.D. patch for each kid’s uniform sleeve to honor Ken? Sponsors welcomed.

Good day for birds; moment of silence for h.Q.

The Elaine Warren Woods was dedicated Saturday by the Scarborough Land Trust. It is l60 acres of pristine land in Scarborough, Payne Road, just down the road from the Maine Mall. (Full disclosure the late Elaine Warren was my mother). A nice ceremony. Jeremy Wintersteen, Kathy Mills, Paul Austin of the Land Trust all spoke, and said nice things, and didn’t take too long. They said “the birds are waiting” for a tour of the woods by all. Plus, a group of 88-year-olds, including widower of the late Elaine Warren, Harvey Warren, said life is too short to sit here and listen to speeches. Fair enough!

Steve Shannon, 30-plus year Land Trust pioneer and Higgins Beach marathoner, said, “We need a moment of silence for Wal Mart, HQ, Home Depot and all the developers who Elaine said no to when they wanted to buy this land.”

Kudos, Steve. You would have liked the day, Mom. The cranberries were in full bloom.

Dan Warren lives in Scarborough. He can be reached at jonesandwarren@gmail.com.
