She was born in Jacksonville, Florida on June 23, 1936, the daughter of Seth Edwin and Vienna (Wares) Pickett.
She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1954 and graduated from Emery University in 1959 with a degree in Nursing. She entered the U.S. Navy Reserves in October 14, 1961, where she met then married H. Furber Jewett Jr. In 1963 ranking officer LTJG Kathleen Pickett, NC, USNR was honorably discharged from the Navy. A few years later, they resided in Maine in 1967.
From 1971-1996 she worked in the Division of Public Health Nursing Department of Human Services for the State of Maine. During this time she earned a master’s degree in Public Health Nursing at Boston University in 1975. After 25 years working for State of Maine, she retired as Public Health Director in 1996.
She volunteered her professional experience to the Sky Hi facility and at Mid Coast Hospital. Kathleen also volunteered at the Senior College in Bath where she served on the Board of Directors. She served on the board for CHANS for many years. She also was a Hospice, Palliative Care Committee volunteer and of several Board of Health Agencies.
Kathleen enjoyed staying active with her volunteer work, getting away to her camp, traveling, visiting family, her three book clubs and especially her time with her sorority sisters.
She was a member of St.
Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church in
Brunswick and Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority. She was predeceased by her husband, H. Furber Jewett Jr. on December 29,
1998.
She is survived by three sons, Richard S.
Jewett and his wife Shirley of Dixmont, Mark F. Jewett of North Carolina and David S. Jewett and his wife Carolyn of Washington, two daughters, Robin Faison and her husband Terry of North Carolina and Randi R. Jewett of Topsham, one brother, George E. Pickett and his wife Jewell of Winter Haven, Florida, 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at St. Charles Borromeo on McKeen Street in Brunswick. Burial will follow at 1 PM with military honors at Maine Veterans Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta.
