FREEPORT – The Freeport Rotary Club received seven awards at the Rotary District Conference in Boothbay Harbor May 18. According to Freeport Rotary Club President Ranjit Gill, the awards were the International Presidents Citation, 100% Club Participation, Public Image Award, Community Service Award, Six Areas of Focus, New Generation, and Peace Through Service award.

“This year our model was peace through service,” said Gill, a retired General Electric engineer who moved to Freeport 10 years ago. “This was done locally, nationally, and even internationally.”

The Freeport Rotary Club has spearheaded efforts to combat the lack of drinking water in the Dominican Republic and have been involved in a Crutches for Africa program that provides discarded crutches to needy citizens of Africa.

The awards are given by the Rotary District 7780, which oversees 40 Rotary Clubs from Maine to Massachusetts, said Gill. The International Presidents Award was personally signed by Sakuji Tanaka, president of Rotary International.

Rotary is a global network of over 1.2 million community volunteers. Rotary members are business and professional people who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill, peace and understanding in the world according to information provided by the group. Some 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries carry out service projects in their local communities and abroad to address such critical issues as poverty, health, hunger, illiteracy and the environment.

The Freeport Rotary Club was formed in 1983, and is a group of professionals and business owners who live or work in the Freeport and Pownal areas.
