at Saint Joseph’s
Saint Joseph’s College in Standish recently announced that three Westbrook students have been recognized with awards.
The trio is Kathryn Bois, Laura Merrill and Leanne Lessard.
Bois earned the Evelyn O’Connor Award, given to the elementary education senior graduating with the highest grade point average. Bois will graduate in May as the class valedictorian.
Merrill earned the Maine Campus Compact PILLARS (Philanthropy Innovation Learning Leadership Action Responsibility) Award, given in recognition of valuable civic endeavors within the college community and beyond.
Lessard earned the Ina G. Bean Award, given to a junior for scholarly and faithful pursuit of knowledge; commitment to the development/promotion/advancement of nursing as a profession; and compassionate sensitivity to all in need.
Seniors wrap up season
Westbrook Seniors Citizens will be served lunch at noon on Monday, May 20, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
The meal includes two hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, and strawberry shortcake.
Pound Auction will provide entertainment and Ann McAlpine said it promises to be “fun, fun, fun.” This meeting marks the last one for the group until September.
Library group hosts garden talk,
plant swap
Friends of the Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St. are holding its annual meeting 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
This year’s theme is gardening and features two speakers. Suzanne Ndure, a gardener, will share photos and talk about her experience in Gambia, Africa, and Kathleen Carr Bailey of Finishing Touches Landscape will give tips yard texture and design.
“We will also have a perennial swap, so bring one, and leave with a new perennial,” Kelly Day of the library said.
Raffles will help support the Walker Memorial Library historic renovation fund.
Free smartphone workshop
U.S. Cellular is hosting a smartphone device workshop at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 17, at 11 Main St., Westbrook, to help people get more from their phones and tablets.

Post 197 aiding Boston bomb victims
Westbrook Memorial Post 197 of the American Legion, 300 Conant St., is planning a fundraiser on Saturday, June 8, to benefit Maine people injured in the Boston Marathon bombing last month.
Wayne Newbegin, post commander, said in a letter April 23 to businesses the post plans a dinner and dance with a live band. Raffle tickets will be sold for donated items from merchants.
“It would be great if we could get $10,000 or so,” Newbegin said recently.

Puppet project show at Acorn Theater
The Improvised Puppet Project presents its show “Summertime Picnic.” at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, at Acorn Theater in the Dana Mills on Bridge Street
“We play music, using ukuleles and mandolin, which prompts the audience to offer suggestions that we use for improvised scenes,” said Jen Whitley
“As our title suggests, we also use puppets.”
Whitley said, “Tickets are pay what you can – so audience members can pay what they can afford.”
The Improvised Puppet Project presents a show on the last Sunday of each month.
