He was born in Standish on April 2, 1928, a son of Clinton and Marion (Gray) Mead.
He grew up in Sebago Village and graduated from Standish High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. After returning from the Navy he graduated from Portland Junior College. Roger was employed at Maine Central Railroad and The First National Store in Bath. IN 1951, he was then employed at Bath Iron Works as an estimator, retiring in 1993. He married Emma Gibb in 1989 and they made their home in Brunswick. He was also a swim instructor for the Bath Area YMCA and a Boy Scout leader.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bath.
Roger especially enjoyed his second home in Rockwood on Moosehead Lake. He and his wife spent many happy hours boating on the lake. He loved to go moose watching and exploring the North Maine woods, the music of the big band era and dancing. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports and had a great love for horses and went to most of the state fairs. He loved football and was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49’ers. Roger was a real people person. He never met a stranger and loved talking to people.
He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Grayson Mead; a sister, Ramona Mead; and a brother, Robert Mead.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Emma Mead of Brunswick; one son, Eliot Mead of Bath; two stepsons, Kenneth Gibb Jr. and his wife, Peggy of Bath, and David Gibb and his wife, Debra of Dresden; two stepdaughters, Ellen Staedler and her husband, John of USVI and Shin Pond, and Ann Snyder and her husband, Patrick of North Bath; four grandchildren, Tony Snyder of Melbourne, Fla., Cody Snyder of North Bath, Christopher Gibb and his wife, Desiree of Phippsburg, and Sarah Gibb of Tusket, Nova Scotia; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the church.
